Celebrating Evelyn’s 100th birthday!

Here’s a lovely story! Evelyn Edwards, one of our customers, celebrated her 100th birthday at Widdershins Centre in Pontypool this week – and we were honoured to be invited to her celebrations!

Evelyn was born in Fleur-de-lis, Blackwood, in 1926.  At the age of 14, she went into service in Scotland.

During WWII, Evelyn worked at Picton House, Dulverton, for the Honourable Mrs Herbert, whose son-in-law, the author Evelyn Waugh, was often seen walking the grounds.

Towards the end of the war, Evelyn was employed at the bomb making factory in Glascoed, known locally as “the dump”, which was a target for the German air force.

Evelyn married her husband in Bedwellty in September 1946 and it was just a few months short of their 65thwedding anniversary when he passed away in 2011.

Evelyn has four daughters, 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, who all came together to surprise her last weekend for a family celebration.

We were thrilled when Sheryl Edwards, one of Evelyn’s daughters, invited us to her mum’s birthday party at Widdershins Centre in Pontypool this week.

Catherine Love, Bron Afon’s Chief Executive, said, “I was honoured to be invited to join Evelyn’s special birthday celebration and it was a pleasure to present her with flowers from everyone at Bron Afon.

To see Evelyn blow out the candles on her cake and open her card from the King surrounded by the love of family and friends was such a joy.

Reaching 100 years of age is an extraordinary lifetime achievement and we wish Evelyn and her family every happiness.”
