I can smell gas, what should I do?

If you’re at home, and you can do it safely, turn off your gas supply. The gas mains tap should be beside your gas meter. Move the handle a quarter turn until it’s at 90 degrees from the pipe to shut off the gas supply. If you aren’t sure you can ask a neighbour or friend to help.

Leave your home and call the 24-hour National Gas Emergency Service. Calls to this number are typically FREE but it may depend on your phone contract. Remember to never use a phone near a gas leak – move well away from the property.

It’s important that you know where your emergency gas shut off valve, water stop tap and electric fuse box are. You should also check that they are accessible and in good working order.

• Turn off the gas emergency control valve, usually near the meter.

• Open all doors and windows.

• Put out all naked flames. Do not smoke.

• Do not turn on or off any electric light or power switches.

• Contact the Gas Emergency Services on Freephone 0800 111 999 (only use a mobile phone from outside your home).

• The Gas Emergency Services will attend and advise you if it is Bron Afon’s responsibility. If it is, you should contact us immediately and we will send a gas engineer.

• Do not restore the gas supply or use any appliances until you are advised that it is safe to do so by the Gas Emergency Services or Bron Afon gas engineer.
