My Bron Afon

Our Caretaking and grounds services

We look after an area of Torfaen the size of several hundred football pitches to do that we cut grass, look after hedges and trees deal with litter, fly tipping and various other bits and bobs. It’s a large area to cover and if you think we have missed something or not seen it you can let us know here.

Covid-19

To keep you and our staff safe we suspended some services because of the lockdown. This has meant that this year there has been a delayed start to grass cutting. It’s going to mean that we are going to cut the grass less than normal.

Our schedule

This is a list of some of the jobs we do on the land we look after throughout the year. Footpaths, roads in the areas where we have houses and flats are looked after by the council who also deal with everything related to bins and recycling. You can contact them on 01495 762200 to report such issues.

All year round we litter pick and deal with fly tipping on our land and in communal parts of blocks of flats.

Once a week we visit the shops and play areas we own to clear bins and to carry out safety checks. We also visit our retirement schemes to inspect and clean them.

Once a month we clean and or inspect common parts of our blocks of flats if you see the team out and about please let them know if you have any worries or concerns. You can let the team know if someone in your block is not dealing with their waste responsibly as the cleaning work is chargeable (either to the block or to an individual).

Trees

We inspect all the trees on the land we own throughout the year. But this does not include those in tenants gardens. If you are worried about a tree please let us know and we will inspect it.  If any work needs to be done we’ll arrange it for when the trees are dormant or other suitable time.

Our year

This is what we do each year. It starts in October as that is when the bigger jobs are started.

October

Depending on the weather we might carry on cutting the grass till mid-October. We start our winter shrub bed maintenance as well as adding leaf blowing and clearance to the standard list of jobs.

Our wild flowers from April will have started to die back so to cut and clear the area for replanting next year. This work may continue into November. Snow is more likely so if needed the team will also be carrying out some snow clearance and limited gritting.

November – February

We carry on with our winter shrub maintenance as well as dealing with leaves, the normal work picking litter and generally keeping Torfaen tidy and if we need to we also do any other winter related jobs.

March

Our winter shrub and hedge maintenance ends this month as we enter spring.

Mid-month we start our grass cutting. The grass in and around your homes is looked after by either us or the Council. The council also cut most of the verges along the sides of roads.

We start the grass cutting off by visiting blocks and retirement schemes once a fortnight, then towards the end of the month we start cutting the rest of the grass across Torfaen. This work is weather dependent so might be a bit stop / start depending on any rainfall and the condition of the ground.

At least once a month between March and September we visit each area and cut the grass. If you think there is an area that we have missed accidentally you can let us know here.

In exceptional circumstances the team will be back out dealing with any winter work.

April

We carry on grass cutting.

We start getting ready to plant our wildflowers. These help with biodiversity and support bugs and nature in and around Torfaen.

Our weed spraying also starts this month. Teams will be out spraying hard surfaced areas we also do more maintenance around blocks to help control weeds.

May

Our grass cutting continues around blocks and open areas.

We start our summer shrub pruning, this helps get the winter flowering shrubs ready for winter.

June – September

We carry on cutting the grass around blocks and limited pruning our winter flowering shrubs.
