A silver medal winner from the Paralympics in China is the star guest at the silver anniversary celebrations at a Cwmbran sheltered housing complex. Gareth Duke, aged 22, from Pontnewydd, came second in the 100m breaststroke in September. He is helping Llanderfel Court in Thornhill mark 25 years since it opened in 1983.
The residents have organised an afternoon party. Gareth will be wearing his medal to open the event and then slice a large cake.
Mrs Ann Williams, aged 91, is the resident who has lived there the longest. She said: “I moved into the complex when it was first built. I enjoyed organising social activities, but I take a back seat now and let the younger generation do it. I look forward to Tuesdays, where we have a meal from the luncheon club , and then a game of bingo, followed by a nice cup of tea.”
Kay Williams, Sheltered Housing Officer with Bron Afon Community Housing has worked at the complex for 22 years. She said: “We felt asking Gareth fitted the bill perfectly. Twenty five years is an anniversary worth celebrating so the residents wanted to organise a party. It’s a great coincidence that he has just celebrated winning a silver medal in China. Gareth is a popular person who said ‘yes’ as soon as we asked him.”
